It seems every gaming franchise that has lain dormant for years is making a comeback. Age of Wonders 3 is one of those franchises with the last game in the franchise having been released a whole decade ago.
Some of you may be wondering what Age of Wonders 3 is. The easiest way to describe it would be Civilization, but in a fantasy world where elves, dwarves, humans and orcs co-exist peacefully. Or not. If you’ve always wanted to subjugate the human race under the orcish hordes in a beautiful 3D turn-based strategy game, this is the game for you.
The game is being developed by Triumph Studios, the same people who made the original Age of Wonders games, as well as the Overlord games.
Realistically, it is unlikely to have the absolute depth of a game like Civilizations V, but it still has a lot of, potentially, redeeming features. For example, instead of merely having battles that auto-resolve themselves as a result of maths, you will be able to fight the battles on a tactical scale (which is also turn-based) once you begin an engagement on the main campaign map where you do the things one would do to expand an empire like settling new cities and mining through mountains.
There will also be aspects of gameplay similar to the Total War series with the creation of army stacks that include military units that are lead by special leader units. These units will then be the ones you will be maneuvering on the battle map during battles.
No fantasy game will be complete without magic and mana and Age of Wonders 3 is no exception. You will get to pick your own special leader who will have a set of skills that will use mana, be it a theocrat who uses mana to do holy stuff like sending your troops into a zealous frenzy and cleansing the land, a dreadnaught who uses mana to make wondrous gigantic behemoths of technology or a sorceror who just uses goo old fashioned magic to wipe people out, you will find variety.
