The Wii U came out just over two years ago and the console has now surpassed over two million units in Japan.

The Wii U came out in Japan on December 8th, 2012 and has now managed to sell 2,009,513 units since that time. This is according to the latest hardware numbers revealed from Japanese publication, Media Create.

The Wii U went to a strong start over in Japan selling over 300,000 units in its debut month two years ago. Sales declined as normal but remained stable. Japan could be the best market for the console so far with worldwide sales hovering around the 7 million mark since its launch.

It’s great to see that the Wii U crossed the two million sales mark in Japan before the Holiday season numbers come in. With the launch of Super Smash Bros. releasing in two days in Japan, sales for the console are sure to skyrocket.

Nintendo should be happy that the Wii U sells well during the periods a popular exclusive comes out. Sales for the console spiked earlier this year with the release of Mario Kart 8. Now everyone is going crazy with Super Smash Bros. out.

Hopefully Nintendo can keep up the momentum next year with other strong Wii U titles due such as The Legend of Zelda and Xenoblade Chronicles X.
