Final Fantasy XV’s Graphics Explained In More Detail

Famitsu had a chance to speak with various Square Enix staff on the Luminous Studio engine. This is of course the graphics engine that powers Final Fantasy XV.

Sqex.info thankfully translated the interview and broke down the most interesting parts. Famitsu were able to speak with Remi Driancourt, Akira Iwata and Takeshi Aramaki. All of them have worked extensively powering the graphics for Final Fantasy XV.

An interesting part about Luminous Studio is that it’s not in its final form yet. They are currently working on version 1.4 while the demo for Final Fantasy XV will use version 1.5. The full game will be using version 2.0 of the engine.

The team also confirmed that Final Fantasy XV’s resolution is 1080p running at 30fps. This was also confirmed by Hajime Tabata earlier this month. The game is native 1080p and it’s not upscaled like some games are.

They also confirmed Final Fantasy XV will have a lot of polygons on the screen. One frame could have up to 5 million polygons. This is the same amount they had used on the Agni’s Philosophy tech demo.

Main characters in Final Fantasy XV will have huge polygon counts too. One character has around 100,000 polygons. This is much higher than the 20,000 polygons characters had in PS3 and Xbox 360 Final Fantasy games.

Square Enix also explained how characters in Final Fantasy XV have more bones. This helped give characters more movements than ever before. The high polygon count also helped them apply more realistic looking hair and more.

This is only part one of the interview. Famitsu will publish part two later on. Hopefully part two gives us even more detail on the development of Final Fantasy XV.
