It seems like forever when the Oculus Rift was revealed, but nobody could buy one yet. Now it looks like the wait will be over soon.
Oculus VR announced that the first consumer Oculus Rift models will be released in Q1 2016. You will be able to pre-order one “later this year”. Sadly, no price has been given for it yet.
The consumer version of the Oculus Rift will be the based off of the “Crescent Bay prototype”. This is the model that you can see pictured above.
Oculus VR announced:
“The Oculus Rift builds on the presence, immersion, and comfort of the Crescent Bay prototype with an improved tracking system that supports both seated and standing experiences, as well as updated ergonomics for a more natural fit, and a highly refined industrial design“.
Oculus VR is set to announce more details on the Oculus Rift in the coming weeks. These details will include more info on the hardware, software, games and more.
It will be interesting to see if the Oculus Rift can help bring VR gaming to the mainstream. The video game industry has wanted to do “virtual reality” for years but the technology wasn’t good enough. 2016 will also see the release of Sony’s Project Morpheus headset too.
