Bungie has been dealing with a lot of controversy over their release of Destiny: The Taken King. It all stems from the fact that there is a Collector’s Edition of the upcoming DLC, which features exclusive items that can only be earned by re-buying the main game and all of its currently released DLC. This was followed by a disastrous interview in which Destiny: The Taken King’s Creative Director Luke Smith drew even more ire from fans.

However, Bungie looks to be making things right with today’s release of the Bungie Weekly Update, which details changes to the release plans, and some additional perks for long-time players. Along with this came an apology for the recent interview.

Smith begins by saying that he is a very sarcastic person, and that if you knew him you might have read the initial interview in a different light. “However, most of you don’t know me,” says Smith. “Reading my interview with Eurogamer and imagining it came from some random developer of a game I love – that random developer looks like an Asshat. But that Asshat was me – and those words rightfully anger you. I’m sorry.”

Smith then goes on to explain that while his words implied that Bungie doesn’t care about their fans, they certainly do, and they are trying to prove it with a few big changes. On launch day of Destiny: The Taken King players can purchase a $20 stand-alone DLC package that will contain the digital content found within the Collector’s Edition. This still leaves out the physical goodies, but it is certainly a step in the right direction.

The update then goes on to explain what those rewards for long-time fans were that Bungie was teasing. “If you already have a Light Level 30 Guardian, or if you’ve picked up and played both The Dark Below and House of Wolves, then you’re a VIP in The Tower’s book. They’ll reward you accordingly with a victory lap that will include a permanently exclusive set of items.”

Expect more info about what that set of items is closer to the release of Destiny: The Taken King on September 15th.
