This is not a typo. A fan has uncovered the Nintendo PlayStation prototype that never materialized.

As reported by Metro, the Nintendo PlayStation console was uncovered by a fan recently. The first photos from it were posted on Reddit.

The Nintendo PlayStation was a collaboration between Sony and Nintendo. It was supposed to be a CD-ROM add-on to the Super Nintendo console.

Nintendo backed out of the deal so Sony decided to enter the console market on its own. Alas, the original PlayStation was born a few years later and revolutionized the entire gaming industry.

I never knew actual consoles were made, but Metro reports 200 prototype Nintendo PlayStations were made. As you can see from the picture, it was pretty much a Super Nintendo with a CD drive.

The Nintendo PlayStation still had the SNES style controller and a cartridge slot for the games. No Nintendo PlayStation video games were ever made, so it’s unlikely the CD drive would be able to play anything.

It would have been funny if Nintendo and Sony went through with their original plan. The video game industry would have been very different if Sony didn’t become an independent video game console maker.
