UPDATE:Â Services have been restored.
Steam is currently down seemingly worldwide as gamers are reporting getting signed out of the Valve controlled gaming service. Single player games, at least those without an online verification system, should continue to work. However, multiplayer games will not function without an outside service.
Valve is usually quick to fix Steam outages, with the most recent one lasting less than an hour. They do not give info on the problem though, so we are left in the dark on when to expect a fix most of the time. There are various areas where players report information to each other about the outage, which usually function well as a means of seeing when it is back up. These include the Steam subreddit, which is usually a great source of info about Steam itself.
These sorts of outages have become a huge headache for gamers as of late, with Microsoft’s Xbox Live and Sony’s PSN going down less often lately, but quite a few time just a couple of months ago. With those services, fans usually expect a bit more stability, since they actually pay a fee to utilize them. At least with Steam, the service is free, prompting less backlash when it has problems.
We’ll keep this post updated with news as it becomes available, so check back to see when Steam is back online.
