Rocket League has been this year’s biggest surprise hit, with word on the game spreading like wildfire when it released for free for PlayStation Plus subscribers this Summer. Now a new article from The Wall Street Journal is letting us know just how much of a hit it has been, as developer Psyonix has revealed that it has made around $50 million since it launched in July.
$50 million is a lot of money no matter how you look at it, but what makes this number even more eye-opening is the fact that it’s reported that Rocket League was made for just under $2 million. It’s also surprising that the game did so well considering that it is a sequel to the little-played Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars. That game originally launched in 2008 for PlayStation 3, generating mixed reviews from critics and disappointing sales.
Rocket League is currently available to download for both PlayStation 4 and PC for $19.99, though it will also be making its debut for the Xbox One in February 2016. A new Snow Day update recently went live for the game that adds Christmas-themed cosmetics, as well as ice-themed arenas and a giant puck instead of a ball.
