Bandai Namco is unsure if Tekken 7 will have cross-play between PS4 and Xbox One gamers. The developers are leaving that decision to Sony.
A fan asked Tekken 7’s game designer, Michael Murray, on Twitter if the game will have cross-play between console players. He said: “Please ask Sony. MS already publicly said they’re interested in cross platform“.
Sony has been open to cross-play in the past, but only for PC games. Final Fantasy XIV, Street Fighter V and Rocket League come to mind. Rocket League also has cross-play between PC and Xbox One gamers too.
However, when it comes to PS4 and Xbox One games, cross-play is non-existent. Microsoft used to be hesitant towards cross-play in the past, but now they are more open to it. We’ll just have to wait and see if Sony feels the same way as well.
The benefit of cross-play is that it keeps the online population high. Some online multiplayer experiences can be annoying if you cannot find enough players to join you. This shouldn’t be too much of a problem if you can find other players on more platforms.
Tekken 7 won’t be out until 2017 for PS4, Xbox One and PC. Hopefully the game ends up having cross-play so gamers have more people to play against.
