With the remake of Final Fantasy 7 well into production, focus on the original game and all things relevant to it are back in the spotlight. While the original game is obviously a classic and will be brought back in a completely new way with the remake, there are some spin-offs of the game that would be interesting to see get the remaster treatment.
Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7, Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy 7, and Before Crisis: Final Fantasy 7 launched many years ago now, and in an age where HD remasters are commonplace it has lead some to wonder if they might be remastered together in a compilation. The Final Fantasy 7 remake director, Tetsuya Nomura, recently did an interview where this topic came up, though he isn’t exactly optimistic about it happening.
Nomura says that “Concerning Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which is a title loaded with a lot of mystery for now, it will be different from the original Final Fantasy 7. If we make a compilation, these games will hardly have an overall coherence. It will be difficult because there is no more continuity between the Compilation and the Remake for the moment.”
It makes sense considering how different each of the aforementioned spin-offs were, and especially considering some of them weren’t all that good. However, I think most would definitely be on board for a remaster of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7. Considering that game only ever released on PSP, it would be great to see that brought back and playable on a big screen. Even if the new Final Fantasy 7 ends up being nothing like the original, it would still be cool to get a remastered version of this spin-off in particular.
However, there’s been no talk of something like this happening, so all we have for now is the Final Fantasy 7 Remake itself. The game does not have a release date, but it will be coming to PlayStation 4 first before coming to Xbox One. It’s also set to be an episodic release and each episode will be the size of a full game, though how that’s going to work is still unknown.
