Sony Pictures has signed to play Nathan Drake in the upcoming Uncharted film by Sony Pictures, the studio has announced. Holland is said to have impressed so much the studio’s head Tom Rothman with his performance in this summer’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, that the project is now being reworked as an origin story, with the actor playing a young version of the videogame character.
With this announcement, the film project seems to have finally found a clear direction after spending years in uncertain status. Selecting Holland as the protagonist of the franchise makes him the studio’s biggest promise as the main draw of two of their most important properties.
Having Holland to play Nathan Drake obviously means that the movie will portray the first years of the character as an adventurer. It is said that the project will be reworked as an origin story based on the flashback passage from Uncharted 3 in which young Nathan gets to meet Victor Sullivan for the first time. Previous concepts of the film included scripts written by Joe Carnahan, David Guggenheim and Eric Warren Singer.
The studio is currently looking for a new writer to work on a completely new script, although Shawn Levy is still set to direct. Levy’s previous work includes Real Steel and four episodes of Stranger Things, from which he is also an executive producer.
Tom Holland, 21, got introduced to the world as the newest Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War. He is set to reprise the role in his own series of Spider-Man films, starting with this year’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, and also in next year’s Avengers: Infinity Wars. Having him starring in both Spider-Man and Uncharted series would mean that he would be growing into the characters of two prime franchises at the same time.
The future looks bright for videogame adaptations, with the upcoming reboots of Tomb Raider and Resident Evil, and the possible sequel of the Assassin’s Creed film.
