Bandai Namco has presented its earnings report for the first quarter of the current fiscal year, certifying the success of Tekken 7. The newest entry of the veteran fighting series has sold 1.66 million copies worldwide, and it’s on track to meet or even surpass the company’s forecast of 2.1 million units by the end of the year. This is a solid success especially for a Japanese fighting game in this generation, which has not been candid to other games like Street Fighter V.

The secret to the success of Tekken 7 seems to be in its great reception in Western markets. The game topped the monthly NPD charts in the United States, and was the best selling game of the week in the United Kingdom, the first entry in achieving that feat since Tekken 3 in 1998.

On the other hand, the game disappointed in Japan, selling only 58.736 copies in its first week, which was half of what Tekken 6 sold on PS3. That is in line with other iconic Japanese series like Final Fantasy or Resident Evil that have experienced a steep drop in Japan with the most recent entries, but have found the usual or even more success in North America and Europe than before.

Other remarkable facts from the report include the increase of 130% in online network revenue from game apps, social network services and overseas, while console game digital sales seem to keep stable at a 29%.

Tekken 7 is available now for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. The first DLC pack coming later this month will introduce the fan-favourite Ultimate Tekken Bowl mode.
