Prior to its release, Bandai Namco revealed its expectation for Dragon Ball FighterZÂ to be their strongest selling title this generation. Now not even a week since its initial release, it appears those expectations weren’t too far off the mark.
In an announcement, Bandai Namco revealed that Dragon Ball FighterZ total worldwide shipments and digital sales have reached two million, becoming the fastest DBZ title to reach this mark.
Though not to make light of this achievement, such a development was to be expected considering all the circumstances surrounding the game. To start, as a Dragon Ball Z game, brand recognition alone no doubt helped to generate buzz and promote sales. Second, with Arc System Works as the developer, not only did we know that FighterZ would qualify as a fanservice game, but also as a legitimate fighting game — the likes of which hasn’t been seen since Budokai 3 and Infinite World on the PS2.
With those two factors considered, all Bandai Namco and Arc System Works had to do was ensure that Dragon Ball FighterZ would be able to appeal to Dragon Ball Z fans and fighting game fans alike, which they managed to pull off according to our review, saying it has a “good mix of depth and accessibility.”
And it doesn’t look like that these sales will be stopping anytime soon either. In fact, they’re likely to snowball in the near future as FighterZ was only just released in Japan today.
So what’s next for the monstrously successful fighter? Updates and DLC. Though the identity of the upcoming fighters has yet to be officially confirmed, rumors suggest we’ll be seeing Broly, Bardock, Cooler, Vegito, and Zamasu in the future.
Dragon Ball Fighter Z is out now on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
