It has been a year since Guerilla Games’ surprise hit, Horizon Zero Dawn, was released for the PS4 and it turns out the game has really made a name for itself.
In an announcement, Sony revealed that Horizon Zero Dawn has become the most successful new first-party franchise on the PlayStation 4, selling 7.6 million copies both physically and digitally from the PlayStation Store.
Here is what Guerilla boss Hermen Hulst had to say about the achievement:
“We had huge ambition for Horizon Zero Dawn and as we approached the launch we knew people were excited, but to see sales of this volume is truly mind blowing. Since launch, millions of players have joined Aloy on a quest to discover the secrets of the old ones. We hope they enjoy playing Horizon Zero Dawn as much as we enjoyed making it.”
Indeed, it takes quite a bit of guts to move away (temporarily?) from the popular Killzone franchise and work on an entirely IP. However, it’s clear from this announcement (if it hadn’t been already) that this move payed off spectacularly. Since its release, Horizon Zero Dawn has received the accolades of fans and critics alike, has been cited as one example of Sony’s spectacular 2017 lineup and even went on to be nominated for a GOTY award.
Now, in celebration of this occasion, Guerrilla will release a free Horizon Zero Dawn PS4 avatar bundle and Photo Mode theme. The bundle includes PS4 avatars of Horizon characters created by the studio, while the Photo Mode theme contains some fan-made Photo Mode snaps.
This achievement puts Horizon Zero Dawn in the same league as other Sony blockbusters such as Uncharted and God of War. And with all things considered, it seems like a sequel is pretty much guaranteed.
