Bandai Namco has announced that Inferno will be a playable character in SoulCalibur 6.
For those unfamiliar with the lore, Inferno is essentially the soul of the Soul Edge and, as one might expect, a rather malevolent force within the SoulCalibur universe. In fact, it served as the central antagonist for the first three titles (barring Soul Edge), where it was the controlling force behind Nightmare in the first two games, before flat-out becoming Nightmare in the third entry.
As mentioned in a previous article where its existence in SC 6 was leaked via several photos from Tokyo Game Show, Inferno’s defining trait is its ability to mimic the fighting style of the rest of the characters on the roster. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case this time around, as the accompanying trailer shows Inferno solely using a fighting style similar to Nightmare’s but with different attacks and properties, such as one where it swoops down from the sky and another that appears to be a teleport.
Keeping in line with that, the Critical Edge is clearly different too. As opposed to the charging attack employed by Nightmare, Inferno launches the opponent into the air before grabbing them and impaling them with the Soul Edge just as they reach the ground.
Considering that Inferno is confirmed now, it’s safe to assume that the method needed to unlock it is similarly accurate — via the game’s Soul Chronicle mode. And just like how you can only unlock Inferno through offline play, that’s also the only way you’ll be able to actually play as it since the trailer states that Inferno can’t be used online.
Fortunately, there is some good news with this: now that Inferno appears to not be the mimic character that we had assumed, the chances of Edge Master being included in some capacity has risen once again.
SoulCalibur 6 is due out for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on Oct. 19.
