Bandai Namco has announced that the Feburary-released God Eater 3 will be coming to the Nintendo Switch on July 11 in Japan, and a day later on July 12 in the West.

For those unfamiliar with God Eater, the franchise debuted on the PlayStation Portable in 2010, having a similar concept as Capcom’s Monster Hunter but having a greater focus on action and the player’s reflexes. The series isn’t as popular as Capcom’s hunting game (especially in the wake of World), but it has done well for itself, producing sequels, spin-offs and adaptations since its inception.

As for the newest entry, the aforementioned God Eater 3, it has a variety of new features that have come about thanks to Marvelous being the developer, and the combat was designed to take advantage of the fact that four people will be participating at once.

Overall, it’s a solid game, and amusingly enough, one of our main criticisms might not hold as much water now that God Eater 3 is headed to the Switch.

In its current form, the game’s greatest problem is that it doesn’t use the advantages that are often afforded to titles developed for the PlayStation 4 and PC. It’s not a reboot like Monster Hunter: World, it’s just more of the same in terms of presentation — the majority of zones are small, with hardly any immersion and interaction beyond the small, shining white lights that are supposed to pass for gathering spots. However, with it coming to the Switch, this might be for the best as it probably wouldn’t be able to handle much beyond what’s already present in the game whilst undocked. Perhaps it was developed this way on purpose, keeping a potential Switch port in mind? Who knows.

Lastly, those who pre-order will get access to costumes and hairstyles based on Yuri and Estelle from Tales of Vesperia. As noted, in the trailer, these are exclusive to the Switch.
