Sometimes we forget that every new game in a series could be someone’s first. If you are coming at the series fresh then SSBU might be a very daunting experience. There’s all these gameplay mechanics to think about, and some of the basics just get glossed over as you plunge into the massive game. To help out we’ve got some basics guides that explain things for newbies. Here’s how to pick up items in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Items are sometimes the key to victory. These powerful objects can knock opponents off the stage, create traps, or more, if you know how to use them. While we won’t break down the actual uses for them, as there are way too many to break down like that, we do want to make sure you know how to pick them up and use them, so here we go.

It’s actually quite easy. In any match, if an item spawns you just have to walk over to it and hit A. This should pick it right up and then either use it or let you wield it as you wish, depending on what type of item it is. A Pokeball has to be thrown, swords have to be swung, but Assist Trophies will automatically trigger, for example. Sometimes you have to pick up multiple items to craft a more powerful overall object, so if you pick something up and it does nothing, just watch for this.

And that’s how to pick up items in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. If you run into anything else that’s a bit confusing please let us know in the comments.
