Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: How to Use Spirits

While previous SSB games featured a huge collection of trophies to unlock and display, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate changes things up with Spirits. These new items are still unlockable, but actually make a more significant impact on the gameplay. While you will spend a ton of time unlocking these guys, it’s that latter part that’s more important. Here’s how to use Spirits in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Once you’ve unlocked all the Spirits you want to use, you can start using them in different modes. The basics of Spirits is that they boost certain aspects of your character. Either your Attack, Grab, Shield, or Neutral stats will go up, depending on which Spirit you choose to use in SSBU. You can’t do this in every mode, but a lot more of them allow it then you might think.

Of course there’s World of Light. SSBU’s adventure mode is probably the primary place where you will use Spirits. Adding them before a tough match can mean the difference between winning and losing, so use them wisely. You will want to counter whatever Spirit you are facing, so if they boost their Attack, you can use a Shield Spirit to somewhat counter that. For World of Light, Spirits also unlock some paths within the overworld.

You can also use Spirits in Smash Mode, though this is a toggle option, rather than the default. If you turn it on then each player can decide to boost one stat using a Spirit, offering another counter option if you know what to do.

And that’s how to use Spirits in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Spirits are one of the more complicated parts of SSBU. We’ll keep updating this guide with new info as it is discovered.
