How Does Wordle Work?

Wordle is a simple browser game where you have to guess the word of the day. With each guess, the letters in each word will be ruled out in terms of accuracy and relation to the answer. The more green and yellow you see, the closer you are to getting the right word.

The optimal way to play is to use different letters in each word you put into the boxes. If you played the word CHORE, the next word would ideally not contain any of the letters you input in that first guess. The only time you would is if those letters are in green or yellow.

Green means the letter you put is correct and is in the correct position relative to the Wordle of the day. Yellow means that it is correct, but is needed elsewhere. You also should not repeat letters in your guesses until your fourth try. You want to try to rule out as many unique letters as possible, especially the vowels.

You can play Wordle for free on the New York Times’ website via smart device or PC. There are also some alternatives you can play if one word isn’t enough.
