After teasing it back in December, Atlus has now confirmed that a new Persona game, titled Persona 5: The Royal, is coming to the PlayStation 4.

We have little to go on for the time being, but the announcement suggests that a new female character will be playing a large role in the game (perhaps becoming playable?). In the commercial which came following today’s “Persona 5 the Animation: Stars and Ours” broadcast, a voice asks what does the viewer think about the Shadow Thieves, to which she replies: “I think helping people is a wonderful thing, but if I had to say, I don’t like them. I don’t think their methods will make the world a better place or help anyone. In the end, I feel like you can only solve that yourself.”

Beyond that, we do at least know Persona 5: The Royal will be an RPG.

With that in mind, it will be interesting to see how this new game builds upon the first one. We already know there were various plans, such as Hifumi Togo taking a larger role in the game’s main story, which had to be scrapped for varying reasons, so its possible The Royal could be Atlus’ way of adding content that couldn’t be included originally. On the other hand, it could go the route of Persona 3 FES and add a new episode similar to The Answer, or Persona 4: Golden and toss new material in throughout the whole game.

There are plenty of possibilities here and fortunately we won’t have to wait too long to get an idea of what Atlus is doing, as it plans to reveal more info come April 24.
