It was revealed not too long ago that Street Fighter’s Akuma will be a guest character in Tekken 7: Fated Retribution. However, it appears that he’s not just a guest character as he actually ties into the game’s story somehow.

PlayStation Lifestyle had a chance to interview Michael Murray and Kousuke Waki who are the Senior Game Designer and Visual Design Manager for the game respectively.

When asked more about Akuma being in Tekken 7: Fated Retribution, Murray gave an interesting answer. He’s not just being added in randomly as he’s actually a part of the story of the game.

He said they wanted to “tie him into the story so that the crossover is not some cheesy gimmick“. This is somewhat similar to the Virtua Fighter characters being in Dead or Alive 5. The Sega characters were somewhat integrated into the game’s story.

Sadly, Akuma is the only guest character that they have planned so far. Both Murray and Katsuhiro Harada have been against adding guest characters because they feel they throw “off the Tekken world and setting“. However for Akuma, they felt he fit into the Tekken universe perfectly.

It’s interesting to note that Akuma is in Tekken 7: Fated Retribution and won’t be featured in Street Fighter 5 yet.
