BioWare Founder Not A Fan Of Potential PS4.5 Or Xbox Next Consoles

by Damian Seeto

There have been rumors that both Sony and Microsoft are set to release upgraded hardware versions of the existing PS4 and Xbox One consoles. The prospect of this has come under fire from one of the co-founders of BioWare.

Gamespot had a chance to interview BioWare co-founder, Greg Zeschuk, and he says he’s not a big fan of consoles being upgraded in the middle of a generation. He feels it will causes headaches for developers.

He said: “I’d say that’d be a gigantic pain in the ass that flies in the face of the purpose of consoles. It’s funny, there’s actually some stories behind that. For example, the original Xbox…Microsoft actually had multiple different DVD drives. They didn’t tell anyone that, but as a developer you discovered that you have different performance and sometimes you’d have these boxes of refurbished drives and different brands and different equipment. It caused incredible variability.

He goes on to say that the potential of PS4.5 and Xbox Next is “complete lunacy” because it makes things harder from a developer point of view. There will be no more set requirements set in place from a hardware perspective.

Zeschuk goes on to say that it will also be “really irritating” from a consumer point of view too. He doesn’t feel that console buyers will be like Apple customers as they won’t be so willing to buy an upgraded machine all of the time.
