Unlike StarCraft II, Blizzard has no intentions in making eSport considerations for the PvP component of Diablo 3. While the mode was supposed to arrive at launch, Blizzard pushed back the player vs. player mode for the dungeon crawler, taking additional time to get it right for the fans.
Mike Morhaime recently spoke at the Battle.net World Championships about PvP in Diablo 3, and said that the development team isn’t designing the mode around eSports like it did with other popular titles from the company.
“There are certainly competitive things that we’ll be able to do with Diablo,” said Morhaime. “I think future Blizzcons we might set up different ways to compete at the game, but that’s very different from creating a professional tournament structure around something like that. In order to do that, you really need to get everything right and you have to have the depth of strategy, you have to look at making sure that the strategies that are successful are balanced, and fun, and entertaining to watch.”
Blizzard hasn’t made much mention of PvP for Diablo 3 in quite some time. Numerous patches have hit the game since it’s May launch, with better end-game content for high level players, and tweaks to game’s real money auction house venture as well. When this non-competitive PvP will arrive, is anyone’s guess, hopefully its before the first expansion for the game.
