Bungie is scrapping the Light Levels from Destiny Year One and implementing a pure leveling system for The Taken King.  Today, on a live stream revealing the game, Tyson Green of Bungie revealed that the developer will automatically determine what level you start the game with to replace your light level.

Bungie says they will take all of the items in your inventory into consideration in making this determination.  They noted that you should not dismantle any items ahead of The Taken King, nor will you need to equip certain items to achieve character level as it will be an automated process.

The new level cap for The Taken King is 40.  But, reaching level forty will allow you to access new gear that still plays into the old light system.  Finding and equipping this end-game gear will give a notable bump in statistics, according to Bungie’s Tyson Green.  Players will able to equip different end-game items that suit their character’s play style.

The Taken King is slated for release this September.
