President Donald Trump talked about NFL coaches on The Pat McAfee Show this week and said some of them could run the country. Trump called in to share his thoughts about coaches and leadership.
According to Newsweek, Trump joined the show just a few days after he went to the Detroit Lions and Washington Commanders game on Sunday. While he was there, he talked with the announcers during the game, which got a lot of attention.
AJ Hawk, who used to play linebacker for the Green Bay Packers and now works as a sports analyst, asked Trump which NFL coach could be a good president. Trump brought up Nick Sirianni, who coaches the Philadelphia Eagles. He said “He’s some coach…He’s great.” Then Trump talked more about what he thinks of NFL coaches in general, saying “Some of these coaches would make great warring generals,” and explained “It’s all about strategy.”

More and more athletes and celebrities are getting involved in politics these days, and Trump’s comments fit right into that trend. When people compare sports coaches to political leaders, it shows how Americans see similar skills in both jobs.
Trump also talked about Nick Saban, the famous coach who retired from Alabama. He thinks Saban should help make decisions about college sports rules. Trump said “I would not be beneath doing that” when talking about bringing coaches into government work. He called them “tremendous guys, great leaders.”
Trump had concerns about how college sports are handling money right now. He talked about the Name, Image, and Likeness deals where college athletes can now get paid. He thinks schools are spending too much and warned that without limits, even big programs could “go out of business.”
He also worries that colleges might have to cut Olympic sports to save money. Trump has been showing up at more sports events lately, though his NFL stadium visits haven’t always gone smoothly.
He also gave his opinion on NFL kickoffs, saying “I hate the kickoff in football. I think it’s so terrible. I think it’s so demeaning.” Trump compared watching football to real life because “You see the winning and the losing and the comebacks and the routes. You see everything. And you see it quickly.”
Nobody knows if Trump will keep showing up at games or going on sports shows. His idea about getting coaches involved in government could lead to more talk about it in the sports world and beyond. At the same time, Trump’s business ventures continue to raise questions while he serves as president.
