According to a post on NeoGaf, the trademark for the highly anticipated game The Last Guardian has officially been abandoned by Sony. Apparently the loss of the trademark came because no “Statement of Use or Extension Request” was filed within the timeframe required. This could mean a few things, either the game is getting a name change, Sony forgot or couldn’t renew and will have to work to get it back, or The Last Guardian is completely dead and will not be released.
Today, on February 16, 2015, trademark U.S. serial number 85700141, The Last Guardian, was abandoned
It is this last one that most fans have feared for a long time. The Last Guardian was first revealed in 2009 as a PlayStation 3 game. Developed by Team ICO, The Last Guardian was to be a spiritual successor to ICO and Shadow of the Colossus. Seeing as how well received these games had been, excitement quickly spiked for the game.
However, little has been shown or revealed since that initial unveiling. Sony has reiterated a few times that the game was still under development, but no further trailers or even screenshots were released. With the PS3 essentially dead at this point, many assumed that The Last Guardian had transitioned to the PS4, causing further delay. As the months have added up though, the likelihood of an actual release has dwindled. Losing the trademark is just more evidence that The Last Guardian might have truly become vaporware.
What do you think? Is there still hope for The Last Guardian, or have you given up? If the game actually did get released, would you still be interested? Let us know in the comments.
