This is not a drill. Just moments ago at Nintendo’s E3 Showcase the company finally announced Metroid Prime 4, with the game already in development for Nintendo Switch. Like many of the other announcements during their show, almost no hard details were shared. Still, for fans who have waited years for this game to get announced, this was a big moment.
While the show didn’t say who was working on Metroid Prime 4 for Switch, it appears that it’s an entirely new development team. Â Retro Studios, developer of the original game has been busy with other titles such as the Donkey Kong sidescrollers on Wii U, but many assumed that they had something bigger going on behind the scenes. It’d be hard to sell a new Metroid Prime game that wasn’t developed by Retro, but producer Kensuke Tanabe is still on board for the project.
The Metroid Prime series is regarded as one of the best in all of gaming. The original game for Gamecube is one of the best reviewed titles of all time, and its sequels were well received followups. Many hoped for a true return to this series, but the games that followed in the Metroid series were often very different, and didn’t deliver what most were hoping for from the franchise.
