Mexico has bought itself more time to fix trade issues with the United States. New tariffs that were supposed to start this Saturday have been delayed. President Claudia Sheinbaum shared the news on Monday.
“For the time being, there is no situation that would lead to a special tariff being imposed on Nov. 1,” Sheinbaum said, according to the New York Times. She talked with President Trump on Saturday, and they both agreed to keep talking instead of starting the tariffs right away.
Mexico now has a few more weeks to deal with 54 trade problems that the White House wants fixed. These aren’t tariffs, but other issues like fights over who owns certain ideas and products, plus other rules that make it harder for American companies to sell things in Mexico.
The 54 Trade Barriers Are Going To Be Tricky To Resolve
This whole thing started back in July when Trump said he would put 30 percent tariffs on everything Mexico sends to America. But instead of doing it right away, he gave Mexico 90 days to work things out. That time was about to run out this Saturday, but now Mexico gets extra time.
Mexico has been trying hard to follow American trade rules. Trump already put a 25 percent tariff on some Mexican products that don’t follow the trade deal between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Mexican companies changed how they do business because of this. Now, about 90 percent of what Mexico sells to America follows the rules and doesn’t get hit with those tariffs.
Mexico and the United States buy and sell more stuff with each other than with any other country. While Trump has been really tough on Canada lately, Mexico has done better at working with him. Part of the reason is that Mexico gave Trump what he wanted on border security and immigration.
Nobody knows yet if Trump’s 30 percent tariff threat means adding 5 percent more to the tariffs that already exist, or if it means starting a whole new set of charges. This matters a lot for Mexican businesses and Americans who buy Mexican goods.
Sheinbaum said both countries agreed to spend “a few more weeks” trying to fix these problems. Mexico now has that extra time to handle the 54 trade barriers that America wants gone.
