This weekend’s Xbox LIVE outage led to rumors that the network had been hacked, and forced offline. Today the company has issued a formal statement on the downtime, and have revealed that the Xbox Live service outage that resulted in hours of downtime for the service was a result of a “networking misconfiguration during routine maintenance”.

The company says that the claims of their network being hacked are “false”, claims that were also denied by hacking groups over the weekend.

With speculation about an always-online Xbox rumored to be announced in May, some (us included), thought that this could be the work of a group like Anonymous. Some users are still reporting issues with accessing certain features on Xbox Live, but the problems were largely fixed within hours of the outage.
