Minecraft Adding Cross-Platform Multiplayer in the Future

Minecraft is one of the most successful games of all time. Part of that success is that you can play the game on almost any platform you wish. Xbox 360, PS3, Xbox One, PS4, PC, and mobile all allow players to jump into the world of Minecraft, go on adventures, and build cool stuff with their friends. However, those friends have to be playing on the same system if you want to play together.

That will be changing in the future though, according to developer Mojang. Speaking to IGN at Gamescom, the developer’s CEO, Jonas Martensson brought up the fact that the newest version of the game, Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition, allows players to use any input device they wish. Mouse & keyboard, Xbox controller, or touch screen, it all works on this latest version of the game.

This, apparently, is just the first step in a larger plan to allow for cross-platform play for Minecraft. Soon players on Windows 10 will be able to play with and against those on the Pocket Edition, with Xbox 360 and Xbox One in the plans for future implementation.

As far as if players on PlayStation will be able to join in the cross-platform fun, Mojang wouldn’t say. The even was sponsored by Microsoft, who also now owns Minecraft and Mojang outright, so that isn’t too surprising. However, Microsoft has shown that they aren’t locking out non-Microsoft fans from Minecraft, with PlayStation versions of the game still receiving plenty of updates and attention.

Just when this cross-platform play will be added to Minecraft wasn’t made clear. Keep checking back for updates in the future.
