Video game movies, everybody loves them…right? OK, well maybe nobody loves them all that much, with almost all of them being objectively terrible. There have been some bright spots scattered about the chaos though, with the recent Warcraft film receiving mixed reactions from most, but overall praise from fans. Now we have the Minecraft movie, which has been in the works for some time now. It looks to finally be taking shape though with the official release date being announced this afternoon.
May 24th, 2019 is the official release date for the Minecraft movie, putting the film very far into the future. “Yes, that might seem like a long time away,” reads the announcement from Mojang. “But it just so happens to be the right amount of time to make it completely awesome. And we all want an awesome Minecraft movie, right?”
Now that we have a full release date the other questions will probably take center stage, such as what the hell will the Minecraft movie even be. The game is very loose in structure, especially in terms of story and world building. Essentially, players are thrust into an alien world and never given any sort of explanation as to what is going on. And players like it that way, so the odds are that the movie won’t give some deep understanding of what makes a Creeper explode.
We also have Minecraft: Story Mode as a possible template for how the film will proceed. The movie could be a sort of meta-story where characters are sort of in a video game, but also sort of not. That hasn’t worked out too well for the game though, with a lot of unexplained conflicts going on due to this story choice.
We’ll all just have to wait and find out in a couple of years.
