Minecraft and VR have a bit of a storied past. The game seems ripe for the technology, but Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson quite famously cancelled all ties between Mojang and Oculus Rift back when the latter was sold to Facebook. With Minecraft’s sale to Microsoft though it seemed like those barriers had been torn down, and today we got our first real look at what’s to come for Minecraft VR.
In an announcement touting the one year anniversary of the release of Minecraft on Windows 10, Mojang states that Oculus Rift VR support would be coming very soon. “And our work is not done: soon we’ll be introducing add-ons which let you dramatically modify the rules of the game, and, in the coming weeks, we’ll enable support for the Oculus Rift, giving players a whole new perspective on their favourite game. There’s so much more planned.”
Of course, this skips over the HTC Vive, which may have surpassed the Oculus Rift in sales due to the Rift’s many supply shortages. Currently there is a fan-made hack to enable VR support in Minecraft for the Vive. The mod is called Vivecraft and has seen some really great support from the community. However, it’s not the same as having full, official support from Mojang.
Currently it seems like Oculus Rift VR support is only coming to Minecraft for Windows 10, though we’ll see if it gets ported to the older version. Anyone who owns regular Minecraft for PC can switch to the Windows 10 version at no charge.
