A recent Monster Hunter: World commercial in Japan has confirmed the return of another one of the series most iconic monsters: Kirin.

Kirin is one of the oldest monsters in the series dating back to the original Monster Hunter in 2004. Other than its age, the Kirin is notable for two main reasons: its classification and armor.

Despite looking like a unicorn and is named after a beast from Japanese and Asian folklore, Kirin is actually classified as an elder dragon which puts in the same category as behemoths such as Fatalis, Kushala Daora, Jhen Mohran and Nakarkos. Regardless of its small size, however, it is still a threat. Kirin is capable of moving and attacking with incredible speed, and can even use a variety of lighting-based attacks to both damage and debilitate any hunter who dares to underestimate it.

Meanwhile, the Kirin’s armor set (the female version in particular) might perhaps be the most infamous one from the entire series. Even if you haven’t played any of the previous games before, chances are you’ve come across the set before in other media. Capcom itself is quite aware of its popularity and even recently included it as an alternate costume for the Monster Hunter in Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite.

It’s great to see such an iconic monster confirmed to return in Monster Hunter: World and surely many will be thrilled to finally see the Kirin armor set in HD (Nargacuga too please). Which monster will be next?

Monster Hunter: World is set to relase worldwide on Jan. 26 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with a PC version coming this fall.
