Sonic Mania was an awesome game, make even better with the recent Sonic Mania Plus release across multiple platforms. The game hearkens back to classic gaming in almost every way, from its 2D, pixel-art visuals to its easy to pickup gameplay. Its price is also smaller, coming in at $29.99 rather than the standard $59.99 price level of huge AAA releases. All of this and more are the focus of a new video released on the official Sonic the Hedgehog YouTube page, bringing back classic TV ad mechanics while poking fun at more modern games.
You can check the video out below. It makes fun of AAA games in a ton of different ways, including a focus on shooter and the inevitable loot boxes that are gaming’s hot topic at the moment. It’s pretty clear what Sega is going for here, with the old school styled huckster pitching the game to you by naming all its bells and whistles. It brings back memories of Sega’s old ads that trashed Mario and Nintendo, as the two companies were bitter rivals back in the 90’s.
Sonic Mania Plus has capitalized on this retro styling in almost every way, and it’s paid off handsomely. The game has been a huge success for Sega, both critically and financially. The game brings Sonic back to his roots while updating and enhancing things across the board.
