Ubisoft is teasing the next entry in the Assassin’s Creed series, sharing a gif that simply says “a new era begins”. This new game is highly anticipated as the series skipped last year. Altering the usual annual franchise release and setting up for a very different experience with the expected 2017 release.

“Sharpen your blade. The Assassins will soon step out of the shadows…” reads the tweet.

Past rumors have pointed toward a reset for the long running series. Assassin’s Creed Origins has been the most likely candidate, with speculation pointing toward a fresh start. A new playable character was also hinted at with past leaks, which would fit with the idea that Assassin’s Creed 2017 will be a new beginning.

The series sort of ran itself into the ground over its last few releases. Not that they were all bad games, but there just wasn’t a whole lot of new stuff thrown in. Players would get a new setting with new characters, but the gameplay was set from the very beginning and differed very little from even Assassin’s Creed 2.

Ubisoft took a year off and has been retooling the franchise, and now we’re close to seeing what they’ve been working on. Most likely we’ll get an epic reveal at E3 2017, with Ubisoft set to host their own press conference on Monday, June 12th at 1pm Pacific Time.

Will we see Assassin’s Creed’s new game there? Will it be unveiled before that, possibly at Microsoft’s Sunday show? Find out when E3 2017 kicks off.
