NPD December: Xbox Outsells PlayStation but Nintendo Switch King

The NPD group has reported that the Nintendo Switch was the best-selling console in December, with Microsoft and Sony trailing behind and two and three respectively. One of the bigger months of the year when it comes to game hardware and software sales, it’s clear that consumers in North America are on the hunt for Nintendo Switch following its big release year. December puts the Nintendo Switch at over 10 million consoles sold in 2017 and confirms what’s been said in countless places, Nintendo is on a comeback after their mediocre showing with the Wii U.

Since the start of the generation, there have only been a handful of times when Microsoft has handed Sony their lunch.   Otherwise, the console war between the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 has been a lop-sided affair with Sony selling nearly 75 million PS4 since launch.  It’s believed that Sony has outsold Microsoft 2 to 1 since launch, though Microsoft doesn’t release internal sales figures for the Xbox.  It’s a good sign though.  With the Xbox One X having recently hit the market, and without any new Sony hardware to release in the month, Microsoft managed to push more people to the Xbox One family of consoles in an important month.

Regardless, it looks like both Microsoft and Sony will be looking over their shoulders for the foreseeable future.  Nintendo Switch shot out of the gates and people haven’t been as excited about a Nintendo console since the Wii.  This time around Nintendo has not only a wide library of first-party games that are only playable on the Switch, but developers appear to be tripping over each other to get their ports on the hybrid console.

With even more on the way, it wouldn’t be a stretch to speculate that Nintendo has continued success in the new year.  It seems like every other day there’s a new game coming to the console, giving players more than just exclusives to look forward to.
