The Pathfinder role-playing games provided a different spin on the Dungeons & Dragon rulebook and now Obsidian Entertainment is using the license to bring a different spin to digital card games. Pathfinder Adventures was given a release date Thursday for Apple iPad and Android tablets that provides a co-op touch to the collectible card game genre.
Pathfinder Adventures will launch to the Apple iTunes and Google Play stores. The announcement also states that “other platforms” will follow. Presumably, that means the Windows and Mac PCs with the chance of a Windows 10 device launch at some point too.
Based on the physical card game of the same name from Paizo Publishing, the mobile title takes a different spin from popular collectible card games such as Hearthstone by taking players on a single or co-op adventure instead of asking them to battle it out with others online. Pathfinder Adventure Heroes will draw from a deck of cards to use powers and abilities to defeat monsters and villains. Leveling up brings new abilities, weapons, spells, and companions to add to the customizable deck.
Co-op play is perhaps the big hook with Pathfinder Adventures, but it will be somewhat limited at launch. The game will only support pass-and-play at launch, but will add online multiplayer support sometime after release.
“Obsidian has a history of working with deep, richly-textured fantasy worlds, from Star Wars to Fallout. We’re thrilled to play in Paizo’s sandbox and adapt it for both the fan of the tabletop game and a brand new audience of digital gamers,” said CEO Feargus Urquhart. “It’s fitting that we will start with the first Pathfinder adventure ever written, the classic and well-loved Rise of the Runelords.”
Pathfinder Adventures will be a free download at release and will come with a tutorial and the Perils of the Lost Coast adventure. Additional adventure decks will be available to purchase and more adventures will be added in a regular cadence.
