A collectible card game of a different sort just launched Thursday for Apple iPad and Android tablets. Pathfinder Adventures is available to download now with plans to expand to smartphones and the PC in the future.
Pathfinder Adventures is available on iTunes and Google Play as a free-to-play game. The game’s first adventure, Perils of the Lost Coast, is completely free. Adventure Packs will add new quests and will be sold for $4.99 or can be earned through gameplay. A Season Pass option is available to give access to all of the Rise of the Runelords content planned for release. Additional sets based on the card game are planned for release.
Based on the physical card game of the same name from Paizo Publishing, the mobile title takes a different spin from popular collectible card games by taking players on a single or co-op adventure instead of asking them to battle it out with others online. Pathfinder Adventure players can build a party of heroes and draw from a deck of cards to use powers and abilities to defeat monsters and villains. Leveling up brings new abilities, weapons, spells, and companions to add to the customizable deck.
Co-op plays is an obvious draw, but is limited at launch. Players will need to pass a tablet back and forth to make their moves, but Obsidian Entertainment does play to add online multiplayer support in the future.
“We’re huge fans and longtime players of both the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game and the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game, and feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to collaborate with Paizo on Pathfinder Adventures,” said Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart in a press release. “Obsidian has worked on a wide range of computer roleplaying games, from Fallout: New Vegas to South Park: The Stick of Truth to Pillars of Eternity. Combining our cRPG experience and passion for Pathfinder, we had an absolute blast making this game, and hope you enjoy it as much as we had fun making it!”
