Quake Champions was one of the bigger surprises at Bethesda’s E3 Showcase from E3 2016. The game looks like a massive return for the series, which hasn’t seen a new entry in about nine years. There are some big changes though, with the game sort of taking on an Overwatch style of hero shooter. Still, it seems like Bethesda wants to assure fans that this is still Quake.
In a new trailer titled “Quake Returns!” Bethesda goes over the original announcement, as well as some new facts about the upcoming game. “So as a designer on the original Quake, it’s really exciting to be announcing a brand new Quake game,” says Tim Willits, Studio Director for ID Software. “One thing that I really want our fans to know is that the spirit of the true arena, multiplayer competitive game, with the feeling that people know and love from Quake, will be there in Quake Champions.”
Willits then goes into what is brand new for this game, which is really the Champions themselves. Players all played the last games differently, according to Willits, and these champions allow players to tailor the experience to their play style. Four of these champions were unveiled alongside the game at E3. Two are returning from previous games, and two are brand new. However, there will be many more when the game finally hits.
Quake Champions doesn’t have a release date just yet, but we do know that it will not be hitting consoles, remaining a PC exclusive.
