2016 was a year filled with fantastic games for the PlayStation. From exciting shooters such as Overwatch and Battlefield 1 to memorable RPGs like Dark Souls 3 and Final Fantasy XV, 2016 had no shortage of amazing titles of all different kinds. But now that the year has come to a close, it’s time to ask what game did the best. Well we have our answer as Sony released their list of highest downloaded titles from the PlayStation Store. So who was the king of 2016?

It was none other than 2015’s Rocket League.

In a surprise turn of events, Psyonix’ vehicular soccer game managed to beat out the competition and come out on top this past year. Though perhaps it really shouldn’t be that surprising. Despite its age, Psyonix’ has continued to support Rocket League well into 2016 with several updates such as the Neo Tokyo arena and the Rumble game mode.

In addition to that, the game continues to be popular for both casual and competitive players with its easy to learn but difficult to master gameplay. Regardless the reason, Rocket League came from behind and became the top game on the PlayStation Store.

But the surprises don’t end there, as there are a few other interesting bits of information in PlayStation’s released list.

Grand Theft Auto V, which came out for the PlayStation 4 in 2014 managed to make the list and secure the 6th spot. Joining it in the “older titles” category is Battlefield 4 at number 8 which came out in 2013. Immediately below that at number 9 is the controversial No Man’s Sky which, despite its now infamous reputation, still made a lot of money during its initial release.

One notable observation is that only two PlayStation 4 exclusives managed to break into the Top 20 list. These titles being Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End at number 18 and immediately followed by The Last of Us Remastered at number 19. This is pretty interesting considering that Uncharted 4 is the highest rated game of 2016, at least according to Metacritic.

The full top 20 list along with the top downloads for Sony’s other platforms in 2016 can be found here.
