SNK has announced the new Samurai Shodown will arrive early summer 2019. The news came as part of a larger announcement that revealed the EVO 2019 lineup.
Despite the relatively close release date, we still know very little about the latest entry in SNK’s weapon-based fighter.
Thus far, all that’s confirmed is that it’s being developed on Unreal Engine 4Â and utilizes a brushstroke graphical style. Furthermore, the only platform that it’s confirmed to be releasing on is the PlayStation 4.
Based on the latest trailer, we know Haohmaru, Nakoruru, Earthquake, Jubei and Galford will be part of the roster, and based on an image from the announcement trailer, we can assume others like Charlotte, Kyoshiro and Hanzo will also be playable. Of course, who ends up making the cut will depend largely on what direction SNK decides to go with this entry. Since it takes place in 1787 (a year before the original Samurai Shodown), it remains unclear whether this will serve as a soft reboot (similar to SoulCalibur VI) or a prequel. Based on its decision, we could either see an entry that mimics the original or adds characters from later titles like Iroha or Rimururu.
At any rate, we won’t be speculating for long. With EVO 2019 taking place between Aug. 2 to Aug. 4 and participants needing time to practice, it won’t be unreasonable to expect Samurai Shodown to arrive in a few short months.
