Shovel Knight, the excellent 8-Bit retro platformer from Yacht Club Games, will have its first major expansion released soon according to a recent tweet from the developer. This is because development has completed on said expansion, titled Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows.
Shovel Knight released just over a year ago on 3DS, Wii U, and PC, with Mac, PS3, PS4, PS Vita, and Xbox One editions coming later on. The game came to life thanks to a highly successful Kickstarter campaign, which saw over 14,000 people raise over $300,000.
The game is a throwback to the platformers of old, mixing in some light RPG elements while retaining the classic gameplay that we all know and loved. Featuring the titular knight going on a quest to avenge his friend, and defeat the evil the evil Enchantress.
The expansion, Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows, puts you in the shoes of one of the original game’s main enemies, Plague Knight. “You play as Plague Knight, the villainous master of alchemy, in a quest all his own. Using his maniacal scientific mind, Plague Knight is seeking to concoct Serum Supernus, the Ultimate Potion. However, to retrieve these ingredients, he must extract them from his former allies… the villainous knights of the Order of No Quarter!”
New story and gameplay elements will combine with a reworked campaign that features new and returning enemies from the original. The expansion will be free to all current owners of Shovel Knight. No release date was given, but with development complete, it shouldn’t take long.
