An ambitious 20 year old has put up a Kickstarter in hopes of making an open-world RPG based on Star Wars. However, there might be several barriers that he has to overcome.

Devin Tripp posted on Kickstarter that he intends to make an open-world style RPG based on the Star Wars universe. He’s hoping to talk with Disney to get permission to start a project like this.

He may have a problem getting it off the ground though. For starters, Disney has licensed off Star Wars video games to be made by EA. There are rumors that Visceral Games is already working on a Star Wars RPG of their own. If that is the case, this project would be cancelled immediately.

Not to mention he only has a goal of $200,000. He said the game will have “the graphics of “Battlefront” or better with the feel of “The Witcher 3“. I’m pretty sure AAA video games cost millions of dollars and not just $200,000. He’s hoping the game has lots of choices like the options available to you in Fallout 4. The risks and challenges he notes are: Copy rights, pleasing all star wars fans, hiring professionals.

I applaud this guy’s enthusiasm, although I just don’t realistically see this getting off the ground. He’s made $8,273 already so there are a few people out there hoping for this to become a reality. However, making a Star Wars video game of that magnitude needs the backing of a big company and I don’t see Disney approving it.
