‘Something Is Happening With Dragon Age,’ Says Series Creative Director

BioWare has clearly been busy for the past several months. Mass Effect: Andromeda came out in March and a patch was released last month in response to player complaints, Anthem was revealed at E3 earlier in June as a rival to Bungie’s Destiny, and now it looks like we can expect something from Dragon Age in the future as well.

The news comes straight from series creative director Mike Laidlaw, who made pretty blatant references to a new Dragon Age project in a recent interview on The 1099 podcast.

“Something is happening with Dragon Age,” Laidlaw said before going on to say: “As I’ve jokingly said, I am the creative director for the Dragon Age franchise and they haven’t fired me yet.”

This declaration echoes comments made by Sunless Sea creator Alexis Kennedy when he mentioned in an interview last month that he is indeed working on “a bit of lore” for Dragon Age.

“What I can say is I have been given considerable autonomy to work on a storyline bit of lore which is well-segregated from other parts of the game, which makes a lot of sense with me being remote,” he said at the time, obviously unable to go into greater detail. “And yes, if you’ve seen a lot of my work before you will probably not be surprised by the choice of subject matter. It’s familiar stuff.”

Unfortunately, we still have no idea about what direction BioWare is going in with this new project or what form it will take. For all we know, it could wind up being a novel, comic or even another film. Then again, it wouldn’t make much sense for Laidlaw to call attention to a series that hasn’t seen a new entry since 2014, just for it to turn out to not be a game — especially considering how well Dragon Age: Inquisition was received by fans and critics.

For now, the only thing we know for certain is that Laidlaw’s team is “hiring a lot of people,” likely meaning the project is still in its infancy and is still a ways off. That said, Laidlaw openly discussing the next big thing for the series could mean that an official announcement could be not too far down the road, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
