Sonic the Hedgehog was once one of the most well respected names in gaming, but the series seemed to lose something once it went to 3D, even with some quality titles along the way. Sega tried to go back to the past before with the disappointing Sonic 4, but now it looks like they may have it right with Sonic Mania.
As announced during the series’ 25th anniversary celebration, Sonic Mania is the true successor to the Genesis titles, which will be reimagining zones from the original games, as well as giving us new ones.
Rather than being developed directly by Sonic Team, Sonia Mania is coming from Christian Whitehead, Headcannon, and PagodaWest Games. Whitehead particularly is known as the Taxman in the development world, as he worked on the upgraded mobile ports of the first two games, as well as Sega CD.
Sonic 4 tried to capture what made the classic games special, but failed by feeling too floaty and modern. However, Sonic Mania truly looks like it could be on even ground with the likes of Sonic CD, and hopefully will turn out as good as it looks.
We will have to wait awhile though, as while this year is the 25h anniversary, Sonic Mania will be releasing sometime in 2017 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. For those that want to see the game in action, make sure to check out the trailer below.
