Sony: Consumers Prefer Discs Over Digital Distribution

Last week a prediction was made that the next Sony PSP would be downloads only.  Though it appears that Sony is split on this line of thinking.  In a recent interview with Andrew House, the head of SCEE, House states:

“At the moment, disc-based content is still very much what the consumer is used to and wants.

However, there has been a change in attitude and technology that is making digital delivery far more feasible and far more attractive.  It is our job to ensure that consumers have the choice between the two where possible.”

This likely won’t last forever though.  While physical copies are great for those who like to collect games or have the ability to trade them in, you could definitely see a future where digital delivery is both much easier for the consumer to manage and purchase.

It appears that Sony will stick with physical media so long as their customers prefer it.  The best course of action seems like giving consumers a choice at this juncture.
