Joss Whedon wanted Spider-Man to appear in Avengers: Age of Ultron, however the deal from Sony wasn’t finalized until after the movie wrapped up filming already.

Empire magazine chatted with Joss Whedon where he talked more about what was happening behind the scenes of Avengers: Age of Ultron. Whedon said he wanted both Spider-Man and Captain Marvel at the end of the movie, but the deals were not finalized yet.

As you may know, Spider-Man’s film rights are still owned by Sony. Sony didn’t lend the character to Marvel until The Amazing Spider-Man 2 underwhelmed audiences and critics. If the deal was made earlier, we could have seen the character in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Whedon also said Spider-Man was talked about being added to the first Avengers movie too.

Avengers: Age of Ultron is still a fun movie to watch, but sadly no Spider-Man easter eggs appear. Fans have to settle for the fake end-credit scene that was created a few weeks ago. Spidey isn’t due to officially appear until Captain America: Civil War releases next year. Captain Marvel isn’t appearing until her own movie comes out a few years from now.

We may not have seen Spider-Man in Avengers: Age of Ultron, but at least the character will be in future Marvel Cinematic Universe movies going forward.
