Square Enix India officially opened their doors last year 2013 and now one year later, the doors are officially closed. Quite surprisingly, the development studio was set for a long term view with at least three years given to produce some remarkable titles.

Without a single game to their name, Square Enix India is now defunct with all six employees laid off. No comments have been released from Square Enix as of yet but we have some ideas as to why the studio was laid off. But first, a little more information can be said about Square Enix India.

The development studio was placed in hopes to capture talented developers within India with six employees helping to produce said titles. Though no video games presented by Square Enix India have ever been given the greenlight from Square Enix headquarters in Japan.

…We lost our focus…

Recently, Square Enix’s president Yosuke Matsuda spoke to Nikkei Trendy (translated by Siliconera) in making changes in the way the company develops future video games. “…in, the past when we developed console games with a worldwide premise, we lost our focus, and not only did they end up being games that weren’t for the Japanese, but they ended up being incomplete titles that weren’t even fit for a global audience.”

It would appear that Square Enix is looking to get back to their roots and start developing games that the core fans are interested in playing. This would make sense as trying to please everyone wouldn’t make for a very fun gameplay experience.
