Square Enix has finally confirmed the Western release of Star Ocean: Till the End of Time on PlayStation 4. The classic RPG will launch on May 23rd in North America and Europe via PSN in the form of a PS2 Classic. Which means, the game is basically the same PS2 title, only that now it will showcase better graphics thanks to the emulation engine of PS4.
Originally released on PS2 in 2003, Star Ocean: Till the End of Time is the third entry in the space saga and is by many considered the last truly great chapter in the series. As the rest of entries, this game mixes elements of science fiction with magic, swords and other more traditional for RPGs. This PS4 version was originally released in Japan in March.
The story follows Fayt Leingod, a young boy enjoying a vacation on the planet Hyda IV alongside his parents and his childhood friend Sophia Esteed. However, Fayt and Sophia need to escape in a starship when the species known as Vendeeni decide to attack the planet, initiating a war with the Pangalactic Generation.
Till the End of Time features a gameplay based on real-time combat, similat to other action-RPG series like the Tales games. During battles, players control one character at a time, with the others being controlled by the AI based on the tactics that have been selected for them, however, players can switch between characters at any point.
This PS4 release is likely based on the Director’s Cut version that was released internationally, which added different features to the original Japanese release, including a VS mode in which 2 players could combat against each other or cooperate to beat the AI. Apart from that, this new version of the game will come with new additions such as trophy support, enhanced graphics, share play, and remote play. You also need to know that the game will launch for $20.99, which is well above the average price for these kind of releases.
