Netflix has shared the first look at its upcoming animated series of Castlevania. The new show presents a very faifthful look to the brand, showcasing a medieval setting, graphic violence, and the same mix of adventure and horror that defines the videogames.

The series is being produced by Fred Seibert (Adventure Time) and Adi Shankar (Dredd, The Punisher: Dirty Laundry), and writer Warren Ellis is taking Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse as the base for the story. That game told the original encounter between a member of the Belmont family with Dracula, which sounds perfect for a series that pretends to be the origin of a franchise. The main characters were Trevor Belmont, Sypha Belnades, Grant Danasty, and Alucard, who is Dracula’s son, and although we can expect a pretty faithful adaptation for the anime, it’s been confirmed that the show will present original characters as well.

The producers have reinforced their determination in making a series full of violence, reminiscing of classic animes like Akira, Ghost in the Shell, or Ninja Scroll. The soundtrack will try to avoid the usual orchestra of fantasy productions and feature a more rock sound, inspired precisely in the first games of the series.

The first season of Castlevania, consisting on four episodes of 30 minutes each, will premiere on the streaming service on July 7th, while a second season has already been announced for 2018.

It seems like Netflix has started to notice videogames as a source of ideas for producing new shows, as the company also announced last week the creation of a series adaptation of The Witcher novels, which in the last days it’s been revealed that it will take the look of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt as an inspiration for the look of the protagonist.
